Troubleshooting & Diagnostics

Diagnose and resolve WebRTC media issues, real-time connection drops, and assessment screening blocks.

Overview

Most technical issues in placement drives or mock rooms are caused by browser permission blocks, network firewall restrictions, or browser extensions. This guide helps you diagnose and resolve common portal errors.

📋 Quick System Diagnostics Checklist
  • Browser: Always use Google Chrome 100+ or Firefox 95+. Safari 13+ is supported on macOS, but Chrome is recommended.
  • Latency: Keep your network latency below 150ms. If latency is high, switch from Wi-Fi to a cellular data hotspot.
  • Extensions: Turn off ad blockers (e.g. uBlock, AdBlock Plus) and privacy blockers, as they interfere with proctoring trackers.

Common Errors & Quick Resolutions

1. Camera & Mic Permission Blocked

Your browser shows a "Media Permission Blocked" alert or black screen.

  • Fix: Click the Lock Icon (🔒) next to the browser URL bar. Toggle **Camera** and **Microphone** to **Allow**, then reload the page.

2. WebSocket Disconnection Warnings

Real-time chat, editor syncing, or notification feeds display a "Reconnecting..." banner.

  • Fix: This is caused by local network dropouts or campus firewall restrictions blocking port 443 websockets. Switch to a mobile hotspot.

3. Screen Share Permission Denied

Assessments fail to launch, claiming screen share was not shared.

  • Fix: You must select the **Entire Screen** tab in the browser popup (not just a tab or window) and click Share. On macOS, go to **System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen Recording** and enable Google Chrome.

4. Proctoring Integrity Flag

The exam interface shows red warnings stating your face is not detected or you looked away.

  • Fix: Ensure your room is well-lit and you face the camera. Avoid backlight (e.g. windows behind you). Sit in the center of the frame.

5. Code Compiler Timeout

Clicking "Run Code" in tests results in an infinite spinner or "Execution Timeout".

  • Fix: This indicates an infinite loop in your code or a heavy memory allocation. Check your while/for conditions and click reset code before trying again.

6. Resume Upload Rejected

The uploader rejects your file or fails with a size error during drive application.

  • Fix: Highrr only accepts PDF and DOCX files. Make sure the file is under 5MB. Compress your PDF using online tools if it exceeds the limit.

Camera Permission Reset Workflow

Follow this sequence to reset and allow browser camera permissions on Chrome:

1 Click the **Lock Icon** (🔒) to the left of your browser's URL address bar.
2 Locate **Camera** and **Microphone** toggles in the dropdown menu.
3 Set both options to **Allow**.
4 Click the **Reload** button in the browser alert or press F5 to refresh the page.

FAQs & Troubleshooting

Q: Does Highrr support Safari on macOS or iOS?

A: Yes. Safari 13+ is supported. Make sure you select "Allow" when the browser requests permission for camera and microphone access.

Q: I'm on a campus Wi-Fi network and the test won't load. How do I bypass it?

A: College network firewalls often block real-time WebRTC streams. Try switching to a mobile data hotspot on your phone.

Q: Why does my assessment screen get locked automatically?

A: Proctoring security locks your viewport. Swapping tabs, resizing windows, opening dev tools, or clicking outside the window triggers warnings. Exceeding **3 warnings** will terminate your exam.

Q: What happens if I lose my internet connection mid-assessment?

A: The portal tries to reconnect for up to **5 minutes**. If your connection returns during this window, you can resume. If it times out, contact your college placement coordinator to request an exam reset.

Q: Why is my camera video preview displaying a black screen?

A: This happens if another application (like Zoom or Teams) is using your webcam in the background. Close all other video applications and refresh your browser tab.

Q: The compiler editor is unresponsive. How do I fix it?

A: Unresponsiveness is usually caused by temporary WebSocket connection loss. Check the connectivity status dot. If it is red, reload the page to refresh the socket handshake.

Q: How do I resolve a "Timezone Mismatch" error when trying to join a room?

A: Highrr matches schedules against your local system time. Check your computer settings and make sure your system timezone and clock are synchronized with internet time.

Q: Can I run diagnostics on my microphone input before starting?

A: Yes. In the media calibration screen, speak into your mic and confirm that the volume indicator bar rises and pulses green.
